Popsicle Stick Perspective

A Central Florida woman painted and placed 4,113 Popsicle stick crosses in her front yard to pay tribute this Independence Day weekend to American men and woman who lost their lives fighting in Iraq.

"To know that this little cross represents a life, it's tough," homeowner Ana Maria Iregui said. "But, I just wanted to do that."

Iregui said she was inspired to put the rows of sticks outside of her Winter Springs home by her grandfather and the white crosses at Arlington National Cemetery. She said she wanted to make sure no one forgot the sacrifice made to protect everyone's freedom this Independence Day. "Number one, it makes me very proud," Iregui said. "Number two, very sad and thankful -- extremely thankful." At least 4,113 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to Associated Press count. Iregui worked with thousands of donated Popsicle sticks and family and friends to make the 4,113-cross display. The group cut, glued and snapped the crosses in place Friday. "To me, it is the most incredible feeling of freedom," Irequi said. (Source: Local 6 News-Orlando, Florida)

Sailing the Ice Cream Seas

As the 2nd Annual Austin Ice Cream Festival approaches, I think about each and every Popsicle stick from each and every frozen treat that I've enjoyed during this hot Austin Summer. Then I remember back to childhood when I would make rafts or any sea worthy vessel from sticks saved from Superstar's bought from the neighborhood ice cream truck. I would use the plastic from the Push-Ups, purchased from that very same ice cream truck as pontoons for my creation.

How nice it must have been for former Hollywood stuntman Robert McDonald to sail his 50 ft Viking ship composed completely of Popsicle sticks. McDonald and two friends assembled the Viking ships from Popsicle sticks sent in from children all around the world. Now living in Amsterdam, the 45-year-old, from Jacksonville, Florida, is president of the Sea Heart Foundation, an organization which runs projects for children in need. McDonald hopes to one day sail it across the Atlantic.

A Moment of Silence

I cannot think of a better way to start this new festival year and blog with respects to one of the pioneers in our field. Monday, Irvine Robbins, one of the founders of Baskin-Robbins past away. This the home of 31 flavors folks. How many times have you been? I bow down. Rest in peace Mr. Robbins.

Today, Baskin-Robbins is part of Dunkin' Brands Inc. and has more than 5,800 franchises worldwide. They also actually created over 1,000 flavors throughout the years.
